The Green Team for Tucson’s 3rd Annual Green Festival will kick off their first meeting Feb. 23rd from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. at Bentley’s House of Coffee & Tea on Speedway (there will be reserved tables but please RSVP for a head count). This will be our designated meeting place for now. Please feel free to join us on this great adventure!

Last years festival was a huge success!
*We had over 4,000 attendees (too hard to count exactly how many)
*2 separate stages (chock full of local performers)
*Great media coverage and Program Guide (thanks to Tucson Green Times)
*Kids’ Planet which was a mini-festival within the Festival just for kids
*Over 125 Exhibitors
*12 Media & Platinum Partners who contributed more than $2,000 dollars in cash, media and/or In-kind donations.
*37 Gold & Silver Partners contributing $100 or more in cash and/or In-kind donations
*Special Workshops & Demos on green building, local foods, rainwater harvesting, city chickens, gardening, etc
*Guest speakers who included: Mayor Walkup, Supervisor Elias, Chef Janos Wilder , Guest Dj's Laurie Starr, Jennie Grabel & DJ Jaime J & many more great community leaders who came out to support us

Now we have to ramp it up and raise the bar so that the Green Festival sets itself apart as a model for others to follow suit. We won’t have much of a budget this year, but as we all know, living green is about simplicity anyway and I think this is a great opportunity to show our community what that entails.

This year’s festival will be CARBON NEUTRAL and ZERO WASTE. No exceptions! In order to have a carbon neutral event, the energy going into the planning of the festival is as important as the energy that comes out of the festival. Keep this in mind as I have had to set some criteria for joining the Green Team that are guidelines I would like everyone to try and follow. The guidelines are by no means set to be judgmental or to pick out an individual’s lifestyle, just some criteria that will help the Festival stay true to its mission and to ensure that everyone is coming from the same place and facing in the same direction so we can achieve the carbon neutral goal set before us.

We will be using many permaculture principles in the planning piece as well and I have already begun conversations with both offices of Sustainability (Pima Co. & City). I am also going to meet with Lisette from Local First AZ to make sure local businesses, and this great organization, are kept in the forefront of the planning piece. Last year, over 70% of our Exhibitors and Partners were local so we have already started off on the right foot.

I would also really like to see a larger scale Transition Towns conversation take place so please start to think about how we can include this in the scope of the Festival as well as a Green Job Fair which my friend Scotty Johnson suggested.

In order to join the Green Festival committee we ask that you commit to the following:

~You are already living or are trying to live a sustainable lifestyle (this does not mean you have to drive a Prius and shop at Whole Foods:~)
~You will not push your own personal agenda or business during the planning process of the festival or in doing festival business with potential or existing exhibitors and/or partners (sorry but I got burned last year so I have to state this)
~You will try to make all of the Green Festival committee meetings
~You will try to carpool and/or utilize alternative transportation to help mitigate the Festival footprint as stated above, when coming to meetings or conducting Festival business (this is not mandatory but counts towards the Festival footprint)
~You will commit to the mission of Tucson’s 3rd Annual Green Festival

We will meet this month and then not again until May, then again in July. August we will start to meet bi-weekly and September will kick off weekly meetings up through the day of the event. If you can think of anyone who would like to join the committee please share this email with them.

Please email me if you have any questions and/or suggestions. theegreendiva@yahoo.com

Tucson’s 3rd Annual Green Festival is a Sustainable Tucson and Defenders of Wildlife signature event.

Peace!
Keely Sinclair~Festival Director & the Green Team (Sally, Judy, Lee, Chet, Laura, Scott, Susan, & Paula)

Promoting environmental literacy in Arizona

Lorna Kraemer, founding member of the group, gave a brief history of how it was formed originally and the work accomplished. She showed copies of a resource guide with two editions published during the TBEE's history. Lorna explained that TBEE formed to prevent duplication of efforts and promote awareness of what various groups are working on.

A similar rationale prompted this informal meeting to explore whether a similar group might help us coordinate efforts across the city and county to leverage our work to a community-wide campaign for sustainability.

About 30 people enjoyed an organic buffet and beverage together on the patio. Represented were city, county, university, museum, youth, social justice and arts representatives as well as members of Sustainable Tucson and the Arizona Association for Environmental Education.

Sarajean Harwood and Anne Aiken-Browning described a proposal to write for National Science Foundation funding for multiple projects to create sustainability education opportunities for youth, school children, and adult learners. We learned from Nicole Urban-Lopez, Education Coordinator for the City of Tucson, what the Office of Conservation and Sustainable Development is planning on the launch of their website in the summer. Carla Clark, Sustainable Tucson's web info architect, described what ST is planning on its website to support action teams and the general public.

We decided to start a blog to keep the discussing rolling along. Since AAEE already has the Arizona Crossroads blog to help link groups working on conservation education and sustainbility objectives across the state, we decided to adopt it as our communication tool.

Since we just began the discussion, let's continue now. Just use the comment section to add ideas that may have occurred to you during or after the meeting. The recognition that this activity is the beginning of what will become a lasting effort and a way of life is the shared sensibility among affiliates of Sustainable Tucson who recently attended a Special Action Meeting at the Main Library. Nearly 100 people gathered to form Affinity Groups focused on everything from water efficiency, to health and climate change impacts, to green faith initiatives in Tucson faith communities, to public education.

Affinity groups that formed will be supported by Sustainable Tucson with a list serve for each group, web space, and general support from the Core Team - a group of leaders whose focus is the administration of Sustainable Tucson and liaisons with city, county, university, and community leaders for coordinated action toward sustainability goals and objectives.

Sustainable Tucson will serve as the follow-up support to a Community Sustainability Forum organized by the City of Tucson, Pima County, University of Arizona, and Pima Association of Governments which will be held on October 31. This forum brings 150 representatives together from an array of community groups to held focus action on a few tangible goals for the next year. It is anticipated that people attending the forum will join Sustainable Tucson's affinity groups or form new ones that will come under Sustainable Tucson's supporting umbrella.

Here are links to upcoming events:

Sustainable Tucson Home Page and Calendar http://www.sustainabletucson.org/

Arizona Association for Environmental Education Fall Conference http://arizonaee.org/aaee-events/fall-conference

University of Arizona's Campus Sustainabilty Week http://www.sustainability.arizona.edu/

Community Sustainability Forum http://www.pagnet.org/calendar/SustainabilityForum/tabid/636/Default.aspx

Sustainably,
Susan

Promoting environmental literacy in Arizona

We have reached a critical juncture where we now have the capacity to expand our efforts exponentially—and we need your help to do it.

You are receiving this email because you indicated, at a meeting or elsewhere, that you’d like to stay informed and take action as a member of Sustainable Tucson. Many of you expressed interest in joining an “affinity group” that seeks to tackle a particular aspect of Tucson’s sustainability. We are now ready to activate these affinity groups. We envision the groups organizing themselves with our assistance, engaging the sustainability conversation on their topic, and launching hands-on projects. The ST Core Team will facilitate the development, integration and networking of these groups to serve ST’s mission: to help build a sustainable community for all of us.

Interested? Mark your calendars to attend Sustainable Tucson’s Affinity Group Activation meeting on the evening of Tuesday, Oct 2, 6-8 pm at the Joel Valdez (Main downtown) Library. Meet other Tucsonans as passionate about sustainability as you are! We will provide light refreshments. Please R.S.V.P. to info@sustainabletucson.org if you plan to attend so we have a head count for refreshments. There will be a Sustainable Tucson presentation of who we are, short presentations describing the different affinity topics, and a networking session to organize Affinity Group members.

The current member-generated list of affinity topics include:
Water Building Economy Education Energy
Food/Agriculture Health Transportation Faith/Spirituality

Other Affinity Groups are encouraged to form as well. If you feel a sense of leadership arising within yourself and you would like to facilitate this first session organizing a particular Affiinity Group, please reply to this email address so we can help get you set up. We do need your help..

If Affinity Groups aren’t your gig, Sustainable Tucson needs ongoing internal help with our events, website, communications and administrative operations. Simply email info@sustainabletucson.org to join in our efforts on a volunteer basis.

Other upcoming events for you to be aware of:
• Oct 2: ST Gen. meeting, Activating Affinity groups, Main Library Downtown, 6-8pm.
• Oct 14: ST Film Festival, Main Library Downtown, large meeting room, 1-5pm
• Oct 25-27: Education for Sustainability Conference

Oct 26: Public Water Conference by Water Research Resource Center, UA
• Oct 27 Livin' La Viva Verde Green Festival
• Oct 31: City of Tucson Sustainability Forum

Check out http://www.sustainabletucson.org/ for more information on these events. Each General Meeting brings more people who have heard about a group for them that is forming a network to support the transition of Tucson to a sustainable city and region. This summer Affinity Groups are working on:

Youth involvement in sustainability;

PowerPoint and Speaker's Bureau for "Steps to Sustainability;"

Training by Nature Conservancy of Green Audit teams;

Film and Discussion nights;

Education for Sustainability Conference (AAEE sponsored) at UA campus in October;

Water Forum with Peter Gleick (co-hosted with the UA Water Research Resource Center and the Southern Arizona Leadership Conference) August 30;

The first annual Tucson Green Festival (October 27).

The recent Tucson Regional Town Meeting brought with it the realization that much work needs to be done to reconsider assumptions we have made in the past about water and growth. Sustainable Tucson will continue to work with government, business and the community to craft a realistic vision of the future for our city. We envision water harvesting city-wide, refitting older homes for greater energy efficiency, increased local food production, new forms of local economy and a sweeping revamp of the transportation plan.

AAEE applied for funding to the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust to support projects resulting from the Arizona Crossroads Summit. Sustainable Tucson applied for a full-time coordinator position to support the rapid growth of the network and put it on firmer administrative and financial ground for the long-term.

Sustainable Tucson will meet with the Sierra Club's Cool Cities group on May 21 at 6 pm at Himmel Library to discuss how we can work collaboratively for mutual goals.

Next meeting: May 24, Thursday, 4-6 pm at Ward VI offices on Anderson at 1st (behind Rum Runner), one block south of Speedway just east of Country Club. Youth will present projects, and plans for sustainability in Tucson. Come celebrate the work of young leaders, network with other sustain-ers and pick up the summer schedule of meetings and events.

www.sustainabletucson.org

Susan

Promoting environmental literacy in Arizona

Members of the coalition delivered short descriptions of groups forming to accomplish common objectives of sustainability (water conservation, alternative transportation, food security, youth education, public education, business opportunities, greening the built environment, etc.)

Focus on Water Conservation
Fernando Molina, Director of Conservation at Tucson Water, delivered a summary of Tucson's water future. He described the City's current strategies to secure water for the future.

His presentation followed Melanie Lenart's discussion of the IPCC's February 2 Report to Policy Makers on Climate Change. Melanie represented the Institute for the Study of Planet Earth at UA. Tucson faces increasing average temperatures as a long-term drought continues and will intensify.

Brad Lancaster, Rainwater Harvesting in Drylands, summarized the most important actions citizens can make and that the coalition can support. During the Q&A that followed, it became apparent that we must be proactive to conserve as much groundwater as possible and be prepared for the liklihood that the CAP supply will be not be the steady source now projected, but subject to decline with years of drought and related decreased precipitation/snow melt.

Coalition members brought up the need to curb growth as a key part of the solution. Guy McPherson described the problems we face as a community (growth, food security, water supply) as the "elephant in the room."

An important connection between engaging youth to be a part of the solution and water conservation was offered by Patty Weiss, who suggested we seize the moment and engage the high schools whose mission includes community service experience. Patty offered that youth can be trained and then hired to help us implement the simple actions suggested by Lancaster that will decrease residents use of potable water for irrigation (which Molina noted is 60% of residential use of water). This offers youth opportunities to learn about water management, science and appropriate technologies AND earn some income.

Using rainwater exclusively for irrigations of trees, plants and gardens through landscaping and rainwater harvesting principles makes sense. The control of flood waters that now gush down paved streets can be redirected to irrigate fruit-bearing, trees that also cool the built environment for an integrated approach to managing the effects of drought. These kinds of projects can be done by neighborhoods creating community along the way.

Following the discussion, Sustainble Tucson sponsored a networking hour with opportunities to join many Affinity Groups that are engaged in projects ranging from food security to permaculture to building codes. ST'smembership team produced an Interest Card to begin to build a data base that will help us facilitate the work of our members.

This is the fourth general meeting called by Sustainable Tucson (October 17, December 12 2006 & January 17 and February 15, 2007). In January we heard from the City of Tucson's Office of Sustainablity and Conservation and Pima County's Department of Environmental Quality.

See www.sustainabletucson.org for more information and to joint the coalition.

Our next meeting is March 6, Tuesday from 4-6 pm. Location and program to be announced.

On the trail together,
Susan
Promoting environmental literacy in Arizona

Both women suggested ways that the coalition can help them gain the cooperation of their respective governing council and board to achieve their objectives. Members of the coalition raised concerns about cooperation between government and the private citizen and what the city and county have planned for meeting the Peak Oil crisis.

Following the general meeting, the Core Team met at Stone Curves on January 16th. Fifteen leaders in green building, permaculture, faith-based environmental coalitions, water conservation, sustainable economies, education, neighborhood development and other disciplines met for two hours. It was agreed that the team will meet on Wednesday evenings to map out the direction of the coalition's work based on feedback and participation of the whole coalition. The next meeting is Wednesday, January 24 from 7-9 pm. If you are interested in being part of the Core Team, please contact Susan Williams through this blog using the comment feature at the end of this article, or by contacting Sustainable Tucson at the link below.

Sustainable Tucson is a melding of an exisiting coalition by the same name which began in early 2006 under the umbrella of Nest, Inc. - a community development non-profit in Tucson that sponsors citizen initiatives for improving community life. Bob Cook, President of Nest, and Linianne Sarno of Sustainable Tucson began the work of establising relationships with numerous individuals and groups working for water conservation, new building codes and other issues related to sustainability. For the past eight months Sustainable Tucson has worked to establish a web site and formalize operations. www.sustainabletucson.org.

In October of 2006, the Arizona Association for Environmental Education held a meeting in Tucson calling for a diverse coalition to galvanize all the separate efforts toward sustainability (University of Arizona, City of Tucson, Pima County, environmental and education institutions, faith-communities, neighborhoods and business communities). The meeting was one of three sponsored by AAEE in Arizona as follow-up to the April 2006 Arizona Crossroads Summit on sustainability held at the Heard Museum and supported with a grant from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust.

The AAEE-led coalition has now melded with Sustainable Tucson to create a coalition that currently represents over two hundred organizations and individuals. We are officially called Sustainable Tucson.

Other Accomplishments:

In December AAEE and Sustainble Tucson wrote a letter of support to the Arizona Water Institute for an application by UA Campus Sustainbility Office to fund an intern position that would link UA sustainability efforts with those of Sustainble Tucson. We learned last week that the position was funded. Over the next week students at UA will be interviewed. Thirty-five representatives from across the Tucson community's diverse sectors met at Ward Six offices (Nina Trasoff, Council Member and Member of the City of Tucson Subcommittee on the Environment).

Kerry Schwartz from Arizona Project WET (http://ag.arizona.edu/AZWATER/wet/), Water Resources Research Center at the University of Arizona, addressed the coalition from the AAEE Board of Directors which requested the coalition suggest how AAEE can best support the work in Tucson.

Lindianne Sarno, Co-Director of Sustainable Tucson addressed the coalition in terms of how the collaborative work can unfold along many fronts, coordinated from a center of shared objectives and sensibilities. She invited everyone present to help populate the new website with resources, articles and key links for other coaltitions members. The new website is built for interactive communication and features a listserve, blog, and word press pages for members. The Acorn structure for working together was introduced. Allision and Dave stressed the importance of forming a visioning team with representatives from the major coalitions within the initiative to make sure there is a think tank at the heart of the initiative providing direction for dozens of projects happening simultaneously.

We moved into break out groups for education and events, and to form the structure through which we will work together. The visioning group will meet in late December and early January before the next large group meeting.

Our coalition has attracted hundreds of individuals and organizations in its first few meetings. Seventeen organizations helped to shape a direction for our combined effort to raise awareness and participation in sustainable practices and lifestyles.

The next meeting is November 14 at 4 pm at the Tucson Botanical Garden near Alvernon and Grant. We expect a very robust turn-out. At this meeting Brad Lancaster will teach us more about the potential of rainwater harvesting for water conservation in the Old Pueblo.

Members of the City of Tucson's subcommittee on Environment, Planning and Resource Management as well as key City and County department managers have been invited. Below are summary notes from the October meeting:

AZ Crossroads Summit Follow-Up: Summary Notes
Tucson Meet-Up Notes from October 12 at the UA Water Resources Research Center

We agreed that by coming together as a coalition, we can launch an effective campaign to promote environmental literacy and build a community that values and lives in sustainable ways. With a “new face” we can approach city and county officials with a “made to order” initiative from the combined resources we each bring to the campaign. We will engage government and business to help us launch a community-wide media campaign and series of sustained events and opportunities for citizens to get involved.

We will focus on water in the first year then move to another focus topic in subsequent years.

We agreed that key sectors of our community should be invited (business, education, civic and non-profit organizations, media and government).

All materials and media should be bilingual and members of the campaign coalition should represent the diversity of cultures, interests, and age groups that make up our communities. (Be sure to include artists and writers.)

Our work will be characterized by a more holistic approach that results in focused initiatives with lasting impacts and measures of our success.

We will approach the City Council and Board of Supervisors as a coalition with a combined membership representing a powerful voting block - a coalition across community sectors that will bring them “an offer they can’t refuse.”

To market our efforts and effectively communicate key ideas, we will need business and governmental funding for professional communications strategies and materials.

We will invite David Modeer now to get involved in shaping our efforts.

Susan Williams for AAEE will serve as Coordinator of our project.

The coalition will meet bi-monthly and provide professional development and networking opportunities to increase our personal knowledge about water issues and support our work.We will strive to walk our talk in individual lifestyle and at our work places.

Our Phased Approach

Form a coalition of about 50 organizations with all sectors represented. Invite media, journalists to follow and publicize.

Go to the Chamber/Mayor to present the Coalition and the Campaign Planning

Media Blitzes to support major events and opportunities to learn about water issues.
Combine with existing festivals and events: Dia de San Juan for example

Next Meeting
Tucson Botanical Garden
November 14, Tuesday, 4-6 pm

Participants at October 12 Meeting: graduate students, environmental educators from governmental and non-profit organizations, the public library’s community events coordinator, interested citizens, radio media, citizen advocates, and public conservation initiatives..

Promoting environmental literacy in Arizona

We are ready to share recommendations for moving Arizona toward a more sustainable future. These ideas were generated by more than 80 decision-makers who attended the AZ Crossroads Summit in April of this year. It was blood, sweat and tears trying to summarize all the ideas put forward. But the participants felt they synthesized what needs to be accomplished in business, govenment, education and many public sectors to move our state toward sustainable practices and ways of living in the Grand Canyon State.

Regional Follow-up Meetings
Each regional meeting below promises to be a dynamic social gathering as well an opportunity to learn about the AZ Crossroads Summit Recommendations, express your responses to them and contribute your own ideas.

This will be our first step toward realizing the Summit goal: to erase the artificial boundaries between various sectors of society, and encourage innovation and creativity in dealing with Arizona’s challenges, especially in the areas of environment, business and sustainability.

Flagstaff Meet-up: August 18 Please join the AAEE members of northern AZ for a fun, happy hour event on August 18th from 4:30-6pm at the Wine Loft in Downtown Flagstaff!
